The City of Carthage Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to announce that the Carthage Dog Park is now officially open to the public.

The Dog Park originally opened in September 2024 as the result of an Eagle Scout project, in partnership with City contributions and a grant from the Steadley Trust Foundation. Previously, use of the park required registration and an annual fee. Those requirements have now been removed, making the Dog Park open for public use at no cost.

A ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Carthage Chamber of Commerce will take place on Thursday, April 23rd at 4:00 p.m., near the new “Route 66” playground, close to the Saddle Club Arena. The public is invited to attend and help celebrate this City amenity.

The dog-friendly park features a fully fenced, off-leash area with two separate sections—one designated for small dogs and one for large dogs—providing a safe and comfortable environment for all pets. The park includes open areas for running and play, shaded seating for owners, free parking, and easy access for daily visits. Visitors are welcome to bring their dog’s favorite toys and enjoy the space together.

Please join us in keeping Mayor Mike Harris' family in your thoughts and prayers at this time. Mayor Harris was a lifelong Carthage resident, graduating from Carthage High School in 1963. He proudly served his country overseas in the United States Air Force. His service did not stop there, serving his community as a council member for 11 years and as mayor for 8 years from 2010-2018. Mayor Harris will truly be missed by the City of Carthage and our staff.
