As of September 21, 2026 the Open Burning Ban Has Been Lifted
Based on the rainfall we had on September 20, 2026 and the weather forecast for the next seven days, including relative humidity and wind conditions—the ban on open burning within the Carthage city limits is being lifted.
The Jasper County Commissioners have lifted the burn ban as well
We will continue to monitor drought and fire conditions. If conditions return to a dangerous level, the open burning ban may be re-instated.
All City of Carthage ordinances governing open burning remain in effect. Copies are available:
• Online through the Fire Department section of the city website: Regulations in Accordance with Section 10-2 of the Carthage City Code
• In person at the main fire station, 401 W. Chestnut

The City of Carthage Emergency Management team reminds residents that storm sirens are designed to alert people who are outdoors. Sirens are not intended to be heard inside homes or buildings. When indoors during severe weather, residents should rely on multiple ways to receive warnings, such as NOAA weather radios, local media, or trusted weather apps. Understanding how storm sirens are meant to be used helps ensure everyone stays informed and prepared when severe weather threatens our community.

🌩️ STORM SPOTTER CLASS 🌩️
The Carthage Fire Department will host a Storm Spotter Class instructed by the National Weather Service on Thursday, March 26, starting at 6:30 p.m. at Carthage Fire Station #2 (3000 S. Main St.).
This free, public training will teach participants how to:
✅ Identify severe weather
✅ Report storms safely and accurately
✅ Help keep the community prepared during storm season
This class is great for weather enthusiasts, community volunteers, first responders, and anyone wanting to be better prepared for severe weather.
⚠️ Space is limited. Advance registration is required to ensure adequate room and accommodations.

Chief Martin of the Carthage Fire Department will be escorting tractors and assisting with traffic flow during the 2nd Annual Carthage Tractor Drive this Saturday, May 17th.

Please join us in keeping Mayor Mike Harris' family in your thoughts and prayers at this time. Mayor Harris was a lifelong Carthage resident, graduating from Carthage High School in 1963. He proudly served his country overseas in the United States Air Force. His service did not stop there, serving his community as a council member for 11 years and as mayor for 8 years from 2010-2018.
Mayor Harris will truly be missed by the City of Carthage and our staff.
