The City of Carthage is seeking one Carthage resident interested in serving on the University of Missouri Extension – Jasper County Extension Council, a volunteer leadership role that helps guide educational programming and community outreach across the county.

MU Extension plays a vital role in strengthening Missouri communities. Faculty, staff, and locally elected extension council members who live and work in our area collaborate closely to identify local interests and challenges, then deliver credible, research‑based programs and resources tailored to meet the unique needs of our community.

Through this partnership, MU Extension helps individuals and communities:

  • Grow safe and healthy food

  • Build and grow profitable businesses

  • Improve health and strengthen relationships

  • Increase agricultural production

  • Update professional training in business, health, and safety

  • Engage youth as valued, contributing citizens

The Jasper County Extension Council, made up of elected and appointed citizens, serves as a full partner with Missouri’s land‑grant universities to ensure high‑quality education and research‑based information is accessible locally. Council members play an active role in shaping extension services that help people solve real‑world problems and take advantage of new opportunities.

Responsibilities of Extension Council Members Include:

  • Working with MU Extension specialists to provide countywide educational programming

  • Managing finances for local extension operations

  • Providing personnel support to carry out extension activities

  • Electing and organizing the local extension council

The Jasper County Extension Council meets at the Extension Office at 6:00 p.m. on the second Tuesday of February, March, April, June, August, October, and December. Meetings are open to the public, and residents are encouraged to call ahead to confirm the time and location.

This is a meaningful opportunity for a Carthage resident to represent the community, contribute to local decision‑making, and support education, agriculture, business development, youth engagement, and healthy living throughout Jasper County.
